Teaching

I am always working to embrace novel pedagogy and techniques to improve my teaching. While much research has gone into better understanding mechanism of teaching and learning, they are rarely implemented in current biology departments. I use active learning and real data from many different types of experiments that I have conducted to teach fundamental skills.

Critically, my approach to assessments is to test for critical thinking while building fundamental science skills. I use writing assignments and take home tests to help the students synthesize the information from multiple lectures. I use iterative assignments with rough drafts and peer editing to work on writing skills that are critical for any STEM career. In every class I assign public presentations for students to practice their communication skills. I like to engage the students in my classes and often conduct short debates on ethical issues of modern biological techniques to illustrate both sides of every issue.

Below are some datasets and scripts that I have provided for recent class activities.
